and Janis (Brian Nelson);

which she walked to school
uphill both ways according to
legend. She commenced a fifty
year teaching career at the age
of eighteen and met John while
teaching at the Canadian Forces
base in Churchill, Manitoba.
Daphne was known for enthusiasm,
creativity and unstinting
generosity in whatever she did,
from family gatherings, to
teaching, to entertaining, to
contributions to the community.
She and John volunteered
together for many years,
especially with the Lions Club
and STARS Air Ambulance. Daphne
was the ultimate hostess and was
renowned for her amazing
cooking. No one left food on
their plates at her house.
Daphne's greatest joy was her
grandchildren. She never tired
of attending sports events,
plays and recitals or hearing of
their latest exploits. Even in
the later stages of her illness,
she perked up at the sight of

WICKENDEN,
Dawn Elizabeth (Currie)
Dawn died peacefully on January 7,
2012 in the Saanich Peninsula
Hospital after a hard fought battle
with cancer. She was 57 years old.
"Prairie Dawn" was a passionate
learner and teacher. She received
her elementary education in the
one-room Bay Coulee and Orkney rural
schools near her home on the Currie
family farm. She graduated from
Three Hills High School in 1971. In
high school, her flare for the
dramatic developed and she took part
in many high school plays. After
high school, Dawn attended
Henderson's Business College in
Calgary and became skilled in
typing, office management and
short-hand. Dawn worked for the
Kneehill County in Three Hills
before entering Mount Royal College
and later the University of Calgary.
Dawn followed her interest in drama
and graduated from the U of C with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama) in
1978. She worked briefly with
Wagonstage Children's Theatre before
returning to university and
completing the U of C Professional
Diploma Program in Education. Dawn
taught elementary school with the
Calgary Board of Education for
almost twenty-five years. Several
generations of young children
referred to her with affection as
"Mrs. Cooey". Her professional
legacy includes teaching hundreds of
Calgary children to read and to be
confident learners. Dawn brought her
children's theatre background to
school, making her classrooms
colourful and happy places. Dawn
believed that a day was wasted if
she and "my kids" had not laughed.
Dawn's "helper" - the life-sized
puppet she created and named Mrs.
Ishkabibble - provided comfort to
students who were having a bad day
by sitting beside them. Dawn loved
taking her students on adventures
outside of the classroom. She led
many groups of students to the
Calgary Zoo and introduced many
children new to Canada to the
Alberta prairie and to farming. A
highlight of Dawn's career was the
year her class won a first place in
Choral Speech in the Calgary Kiwanis
Music Festival and performed at the
Jubilee Auditorium. The Alberta
Teachers' Association awarded Dawn
with a lifetime membership in
recognition of her years of service
to the teaching profession and to
the welfare of youth. In 2004, Dawn
moved to Vancouver Island. She
worked at the Shoal Centre and the
Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, and
for the Ministry of Transportation
in Victoria. She became active in
the Sidney fibre arts community,
especially the Wednesday Night
Knitting Group. Those who loved Dawn
remember her as passionate,
artistic, loyal, fun, and stubborn.
Her life's many challenges did not
defeat her but made her stronger.
Dawn is survived by her husband,
Rodger Wickenden, her sisters
Shelley Currie (Roger Mah Poy) and
Beverley Currie (David Wood),
nephews Peter, Christopher, Robin
and Timothy, stepdaughter Tawna, as
well as extended family and many
friends and colleagues. She is
predeceased by her parents, Bette
and Elmer Currie. There will be no
Funeral Service at Dawn's request. A
celebration of Dawn's life will be
held between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. on
Sunday, May 6, 2012, at the Bill
Warren Centre - Canmore Nordic
Centre, Canmore, AB. If you would
like to make a donation in Dawn's
memory, please consider Wagonstage
Children's Theatre (https://netcommunity.ucalgary.ca/SSLPage.aspx?pid=2122&frcrld=1

LEMIRE,
Delphine Malvina (nee Lagasse)
October 29, 1917 - January 15, 2012.
It is with love and prayers that we
remember our mother and grandmother,
Delphine. Born in Pibroch, Alberta,
she was the second of seven children
born to Louise and Johnnie Lagasse.
As a young woman, she accepted a
teaching post in a one-room country
school near Fort Macleod. It was
there that she met and married her
husband Paul Lemire, and together
they farmed in the Mud Lake area
until his untimely death in 1950.
Left to raise her two young children
Paulette and Emile, Delphine taught
in the district until 1959 when she
moved her family to Calgary. After
ten years of night and summer
school, Delphine earned a Degree in
Education, and was the first High
School, Home Economics Teacher in
the Calgary Separate School Board.
Her strong belief in education was
demonstrated time and again as she
opened her home to nieces and
nephews to grant them the
opportunity to pursue their
schooling. A love of Family and
Church were always at the centre of
her life and she seldom missed a
family gathering no matter how far
she had to travel, and always looked
forward to visits from extended
family. An active member of the
Church all her life, it was in
answer to prayers that she became
aware of Jean Vanier and the L'Arche
Community, and was instrumental in
establishing a home in Calgary with
her son Emile Lemire being its first
member. Always a very social and
outgoing person, Delphine loved to
travel the world and experience new
things. After retirement she
volunteered at the Kirby Centre for
over 28 years, and enjoyed modeling
vintage clothing, and more recently
being one of the Calendar Girls at
the Fountains of Missions. On
January 15, 2012, Delphine passed
away peacefully. She is survived by
her daughter Paulette (Otto)
Paulgaard and her son Emile Lemire;
three grandchildren Sandra, Monte (Josiane)
and Paula (Shane); and five
great-grandchildren Chandler, Lacey,
Tristin, Lars, and Ivy. She is also
survived by one sister Annette
(Alfred) Valliers and much extended
family. Relatives and friends are
invited to Prayers and Tributes at
Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 -
24 Street S.W.) today, January 19,
2012 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will

CHRISTIE, Janet "Jan" Elizabeth
(nee Ablett) May
21, 1948 - November 23, 2011.
With deep sadness we announce the
passing of Jan who fought a long and
courageous battle with cancer. She
leaves her loving husband and best
friend Wayne Christie of Priddis.
They shared many happy years
travelling, golfing and sharing an
abundance of friends. Jan had a dry
wit that emerged in many poems. She
will be fondly remembered for the
poems she composed for the golfing
ladies at Priddis. Jan was a devoted
and committed elementary school
teacher for nearly thirty years. She
proudly created the "Christie Way";
the kids knew exactly what to do and
they loved the structure. Jan was a
loyal and true friend who had a
wonderful manner and ability to
develop long lasting friendships.
She touched the hearts of many
people and developed many special
friends over the last eleven winters
spent in Tucson. Jan is survived by
her loving husband Wayne; her mother
Megan Ablett; her brothers, John
(Patricia), Jeff (Sharon) and James
(Patti); and sister Judy (Les); as
well as many nieces and nephews. A
Celebration of Jan's Life will be
held at Red Deer Lake United Church
(West on Highway No. 22x past Spruce
Meadows) on Friday, December 16,
2011 at 1:00 p.m. Forward

STUCKEN,
Margaret. December
10, 1932 - November 17, 2011.
Margaret Myrtle Stucken (nee
Hartnell) passed away peacefully in
Parksville, B.C. due to
complications from Alzheimer's
Disease. Marg is survived by her
beloved husband of 48 years, Alex;
by her children, Kevin (wife Lois,
grandsons Jacob, Sam and Tom), Janet
Haigh (husband Phil), and Lynn Brown
(husband Chris, grandsons Jack and
Eric). She will also be mourned by
her siblings: Louise, Ron, David,
Madeline and Joan. Marg was
predeceased by her parents Bernard
and Isabel Hartnell, her grandson
Ben Stucken and her sister Norah.
Marg was born and raised in Regina,
part of a large and close-knit
family that saw their way through
the difficult years of the 1930's.
Marg grew up to become a teacher and
champion basketball coach at Sacred
Heart Academy prior to meeting Alex
and marrying on December 29, 1962.
Her three children followed over the
next seven years and Marg gave her
family a home filled with love,
stimulation, encouragement,
fulfillment and happiness. She was
endlessly supportive as her kids
became involved in many activities
and became especially committed to
volunteering with the Calgary
Patriots Swim Club and Holy Spirit
Parish. Somehow she and Alex also
found time to take swim lessons,
going from Beginners to the
Instructors level. This provided her
with many opportunities to teach
kids and instruct aquacise for years
to come. There was always time to go
for a vacation at Beach Acres,
Parksville where the family enjoyed
the beach, tennis, family and
friends. Eventually Alex's work took
the family to Jakarta, Indonesia and
over the next 11 years Marg worked
hard at various volunteer activities
in the Indonesian, school and ex-pat
communities. Marg and Alex
eventually retired to a house near
the beach in Victoria, BC. It was
there that many family and friends
visited and five grandsons came to
play with the best grandmother they
could ever know. Those family visits
will always be cherished for the
true gift that they were. Marg had a
wonderful laugh to go with her sharp
intelligence and never seemed to
rest, always striving to grow as a
person. Whether it was learning how
to cook exotic new dishes, going on
hiking adventures in the Rockies,
Alps, Himalayas, New Zealand,
Ireland and with the Walk and Talks,
swimming in fresh water lakes and
the ocean or dedicating herself to
the countless hours of volunteering,
she never took her time on earth for
granted. Marg had a deep and abiding
faith that was always present in her
approach to life and raising her
family. It was that faith that
carried her through her tough times
like being half a world away from
her children or coping first with
Alex's Parkinson's diagnosis and
then the onset of her disease. The
family would like to express their
gratitude to the many staff members
at the Bayview wing of Stanford
Place, Parksville, for their
unending care and support for Marg
throughout the last three years of
her illness. She could not have been
in better hands. Cremation has taken
place and a Funeral Mass will be
held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday,
November 24, 2011 at the Church of
the Ascension, Parksville. A tribute
and lunch gathering will follow. If
friends so desire, in lieu of
flowers, a memorial donation may be
made to either charity that held a
special place in Marg and Alex's
heart:
Chalice.ca
or
Covenanthouse.org.
Expressions of sympathy can be made
to the family email address:
stuckenmemorial@shaw.ca.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted
to Sands Funeral Chapel, Nanaimo.
