LOUDEN, Betty Marie (nee
Christensen).
February 12, 1925 -
September 25, 2011.
Betty Louden, beloved wife
of Bob of Calgary, passed
away peacefully on Sunday,
September 25, 2011 at the
age of 86 years. Betty was
born in Chancellor, AB in
1925, the youngest of five
children of Ed and Marie
Christensen. Her farm
childhood gave her an
enduring love of nature and
the outdoors. She grew to
love hiking and mountain
climbing and was a founding
member of the Canadian Youth
Hostel Association and an
active member of the Skyline
Hikers of the Canadian
Rockies. Betty graduated
from the Calgary Normal
School in 1944 and began her
career as a teacher. She
taught grades one to nine in
one-room school houses for
three years in rural
communities surrounding
Calgary. Then she moved into
the city, and taught grade
one before retiring from
teaching in 1978. She taught
the English component of the
first English-French
bilingual program in Calgary
in the early seventies.
Betty married Bob Louden in
1952. Betty and Bob and
their family enjoyed
countless picnics, hikes,
and camping trips in the
mountains. Betty always
expressed a strong
connection to the land, and
she was thrilled to be able
to get away "to the
wilderness" in the years
that she and Bob owned an
acreage near Sundre and
later a cabin in the
Kananaskis. Betty's family
was important to her. She
enjoyed good relationships
with everyone in her
extended family across the
generations. She loved
nothing more than family
gatherings and staying in
touch with everyone. Betty
loved people and made many
good friends through her
involvement in numerous
associations over the years.
She was creative and
artistic. Betty enjoyed
watercolour painting and, in
recent years, landscape
quilting. She was a member
of the Alberta Society of
Artists and became a
sought-after fibre arts
instructor. Betty is
survived by her husband Bob;
daughter Colleen Lemire
(Dave); granddaughters,
Janet and Karen; son Blair
(Carol Ann); grandsons,
Austin and Evan; her brother
Howard; and numerous nieces
and nephews. She was an
inspiration to all of us,
and we will remember her as
a wonderful wife, mother,
grandmother, tante (aunt),
and friend. Friends and
relatives are invited to a
social gathering in Betty's
honour at McINNIS &

ANDERSON
(Marthold), Muriel Dean Lucy
(nee Barlow)
January 1, 1929 - September
16, 2011.
It is with great sadness
that we announce the
peaceful passing of Muriel
Dean Lucy Anderson
surrounded by her loving
family. Muriel was born at
Hughenden Manor in
Buckinghamshire, England
while her mother was
visiting relatives. Her
parents had earlier
immigrated to a farm in
Holden, Alberta. There were
many stories of her pastoral
childhood where she and her
sisters attended a one-room
schoolhouse that must have
been the inspiration for all
of them to become teachers.
She earned a Normal
Certificate at University of
Alberta and later a Bachelor
of Education at University
of Calgary. Muriel was a
well-respected and much
loved educator. She taught
at many elementary schools
in Calgary including Colonel
Sanders, Logos Christian,
Huntington Hills, Dr. E.W.
Coffin, Queen's Park, Albert
Park and others. She was a
keen advocate for physical
education and one of her
passions was to start
badminton clubs for her
students. At seventy- five
years of age, she earned
five medals in singles and
doubles badminton at the
Masters World Games. Muriel
loved all sports and was a
dedicated Calgary Stampeders'
fan. Once retired, she
volunteered her time at ESL
teaching, The Women's
Shelter, Inn from the Cold
and the Cancer Society. She
was an active member of St.
Giles Presbyterian Church
where she taught Sunday
school for many years and
faithfully served with the
Women's Missionary Society.
Muriel was a voracious
reader and writer. Her
pastimes included:
gardening, crossword
puzzles, bridge, cribbage
and board games. She was
known for her boundless
energy. More importantly,
Muriel will be remembered
for her loving and giving
nature, her faith in God,
and her belief in serving
Him through others. She is
predeceased by her first
husband of forty-two years,
Edward (Ted) and her son,
David. She is survived by
her children: Jim (Linda),
Doug (T.J.), Kathryn (Brian)
Speck and Sam (Claudette)
and her adored
grandchildren: Carissa

Marthold and her step
grandchildren Lindsay and
Samantha. She will be deeply
missed by her dear sisters:
Connie McDougall, Beth
(Ernie) Merta and Dorothy
(Barney) Sigurdson and
multiple nieces and nephews.
Her sweet puppy, Charlie, is
lost without her. A Memorial

Stelck, Kay
|
|
|
STELCK,
Kay June 18,
1919 - September 10, 2011.
"Women aren't so mere as
they used to be" (Walt
Kelly) Mary Kathleen Stelck, Kay to everyone who
knew her, was born in
Edmonton in 1919. She
attended Westmount School
and the Victoria High, long
before it was Victoria
School for the Performing
Arts. She attended
University of Alberta and
her first degree was in
Geology which may be a
surprise to those who knew
her as a high school English
teacher. She also attended
the Alberta College for Art,
in Calgary, while waiting
for one of her teaching
positions to open up. Kay's
first employment out of
university was with the YWCA
as a recreation director and
counsellor both in London,
Ontario and for several
years back in Alberta. After
that she began her career in
teaching, initially in one
room schools near Lamont,
then Ashmont, then Hastings
Lake. She then taught ESL to
new immigrants at James
Short School in Calgary
before returning to Edmonton
where she taught English,
first at Victoria Composite
and then at Harry Ainley.
Kay also took the time to
teach the even greater works
of literature to her four
nephews; such stellar works
as: See that Fly Upon
the Wall, Toity Poiple Boids,
Deck Us All With Boston
Charlie, World travel,
theatre and music of all
kinds were Kay's passions;
if there was dancing to be
done, Kay was dancing; if
there was singing to be
done, Kay would lead the
singing; if there was an
adventure to be had, Kay had
the enthusiasm. Kay also had
a life-long compassion for
mercy and justice and often
personally provided shelter
and support for victims of
violence, of poverty and
abuse. Left to remember her
glorious 92 years of life
are her brother Charles and
her nephews David, Brian,
and Leland, plus Sue,
Maggie, Judy and Caryn and
numerous grandnephews and
nieces. To send condolences,

ABEN,
Patricia Anne "Pat"
October 5, 1959 - July 9,
2011 Patricia Aben,
beloved wife of Peter Droppo,
passed away surrounded by
family at Agape Hospice. The
world lost a brilliant mind
and a loving soul when Pat
passed away on July 9, 2011
at the age of 51 years. She
leaves a legacy of
generosity, love and
learning. We will remember
her creativity, her faith -
and her passion for the
written and spoken word,
music, gardening, travel,
and sharing knowledge of
every kind. A teacher
always, Pat continued to
bless us with life lessons
to the end, allowing us to
share in incredible and
sometimes difficult
learnings as we cared for
her. Pat lives on in the
minds and hearts of her
family, friends and
students. For some, teaching
is a profession; for Pat, it
was a vocation. She spent
over twenty-five years
teaching at various schools
in Calgary's Catholic School
system. Her skill, warmth
and wonderful sense of
humour allowed Pat to make
deep connections with her
students, both emotionally
and scholastically. Many
have written even years
later that she was their
favorite teacher, and also a
friend because of the way
she spoke and related to
them. Though we lost her too
early, Pat is now without
pain and we feel sure that
she is watching over us and
loving us from a place free
of suffering. Our family is
blessed with very close
relationships, and Pat's
presence in our daily lives
will be deeply missed. She
is lovingly remembered by
her father Con Aben (Jane),
her brother Tom Aben (Darmody),
her sister Mary Aben
(Richard), and nephew Jesse
Aben (Nicole). Pat was
predeceased by her beloved
mother, Theresa Aben. She
had many treasured friends,
with Pam Van de Mosselaer,
Joann Quinn, and Debbie
Nicholson being especially
close to her heart.

Dyer,
John
|
|
|
DYER, John Alfred
February 3, 1943 - June 4,
2011 John Dyer, beloved
husband of Geraldine Dyer of
Calgary, passed away on
Saturday, June 4, 2011 at
the age of 68 years. John
was a dynamic presence and
will be greatly missed by
all his family, his wife
Geraldine, his daughter
Christine, her husband
Calvin Davies, their
daughter Stefanie; his
daughter Michele, her
husband Doran Midyette and
their four children, Austin
and Josie Baerg, Kirsi and
Tia Midyette. He has a
sister, Joan Madler, and a
plethora of nieces, nephews,
uncles, aunts, and cousins.
In addition he has three
brothers-in-law Bob Cave
(Pat), Don Cave (Phyllis)
and John Cave (Norma). The
essence of his happiness was
his family whom he loved
deeply, and greatly
appreciated the support they
provided throughout his life
and the continuous joy that
was ever present in their
company. John also
appreciated the support and
caring of a multitude of
friends and colleagues. He
was also grateful for the
endless care extended by the
doctors, nurses and staff at
the Foothills Medical
Centre, Tom Baker Cancer
Centre, Home Care staff and
Agape Hospice. John was born
in Calgary, raised in Swift
Current, Saskatchewan and
returned to Calgary to
attend University of
Calgary. He graduated with a
B.Ed. degree in 1965 with a
music major and completed a
MA in Philosophy in 1977. He
worked as an educator with
Calgary Board of Education
for twenty-seven years as
teacher, Rideau Park Junior
High; assistant principal,
Ernest Morrow Junior High;
principal, Georges P. Vanier
Junior High, and Wilma
Hansen Junior High;
assistant superintendent,
South West Area Office, and
coordinator of staff
development, Department of
Human Resources. In 1993 he
left the C.B.E. and
established his own
consulting firm and worked
as a trainer, presenter and
entertainer across Canada
and throughout the United
States with occasional work
in Spain, Singapore and
Australia. His presentations
were not only informative
and sometimes life-altering
but they were also filled
with gracious humour and
good-hearted laughter. This
was consistent with one of
his missions in life: "to
share a smile with the
people he met each day".
Throughout his life John
maintained the belief that
the quality of life was
supported by the four
pillars of personal
meaningfulness - living,
learning, laughing, and
loving. John loved every job
he had and he sustained an
indelible conviction that
children are the most
important natural resource
we have. Their education is
not only an investment in
the quality of life today,
but, also, the quality of
life tomorrow. He believed
that being an educator is
one of the most important
ministries that one could
have in life. John always
found this quote
entertaining: "Life is not a
journey to the grave with
the intention of arriving
safely in a pretty,
well-preserved body. But
rather, to skid in
broadside, thoroughly used
up, totally worn out and
proclaiming, wow, it's been
one hell of a ride." That is
how he lived, and that is
how he died. A Celebration
of John's Life will be held
at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Park
Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow
Drive S.W.) on Friday, June
10, 2011 at 2:30 p.m.

MONIER,
Mary Colleen (nee Palmer)
1959 - 2011 Colleen Monier
passed away peacefully on
Saturday, June 4, 2011 at
the age of 51 years after a
painful, yet courageous
struggle with cancer.

University of San Diego with
an MA in Counselling. Her
teaching career began in
Fort McMurray, AB and

many talents as an educator
was her ability to encourage
and inspire even the most
challenging students and
those most in need of
motivation. In 2001, she
married Bill Monier and
shortly after, left the
education world to work in
his accounting office.
Everything about the

was a devoted Catholic and
contributed many hours to
the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul, Hospitality and the
GAMMA Girls' ministries as
well as to Chalice, through
which she found many foster
parents for Catholic
sponsorship. In spite of all
the personal hardships she
endured over the past two
and a half years, she
soldiered on with her usual
determination, unwavering
hope and big smile. She had
a radiant smile that lit up
the room. Her positive
influence on others is
evidenced by her large
circle of friends. Colleen
will be remembered for her
strong faith, for her sense
of style and for her ability
to bring out the best in
people by her encouraging,
thoughtful and caring
approach. She is survived by
her parents, Mary and Lou

|
|
R.
Fern Langemann May 3, 1937 -
May 16, 2011 Educator
and Artist Fern's friends
will remember her as a
passionate educator and
highly talented artist.
Students in the elementary
school system, where she
worked hard to broaden the
scope of elective choices,
are richer for being exposed
to her passion for teaching
and ability to recognize and
encourage the innate talents
in every student. Her
teaching colleagues will
remember her for her
knowledge, support and
encouragement. Many in the
Calgary Public School system
will remember her
contributions during years
in curriculum planning and
as Assistant Principal of
Marion Carson Elementary.
Fern was a great advocate
for the teaching of art and
believed everyone could be
an artist. Even after she
left formal teaching in the
classroom to devote more
time to cultivate her talent
for landscape painting, she
continued to nurture new
artists. In recent years,
while residing in Mexico,
she combined her two loves
of teaching and painting by
creating and delivering
painting classes for friends
and neighbours. The pleasure
she found interpreting the
landscapes of Southern
Alberta, Southern Africa and
Latin America is evident in
a substantial portfolio of
paintings. With her
paintings hanging in
collections on five
continents, Fern's works now
give thousands of others the
pleasure of her insightful
renderings. As one of her
friends said of her, "Fern
saw beauty in everything
around her." She spent much
of her life unlocking this
beauty and making it
accessible to others through
the medium of her paintings.
Fern has left the world a
better and more beautiful
place through her passions
for teaching and painting. A
Funeral Service will be held
at Christ Church, Elbow Park

arts, in particular, Gilbert
and Sullivan led him to many
wonderful school productions
of the Mikado and HMS
