Tax Tips

Did you receive a pension from an employer-sponsored pension plan or start taking periodic withdrawals from your RRSP or RRIF this year?  Then, you should explore whether you and your spouse qualify for pension income splitting.  This could result in lucrative tax savings.

You may be able to transfer up to 50% of your pension benefits, but there is a catch--an age limit for some. Those with benefits from employer sponsored plans can take advantage of pension income splitting at any age; others with periodic income from RRSPs, RRIFs or other annuities, generally have to wait to age 65 to income split.

If you took early retirement in any year since 2008, check out opportunities to split income with your spouse- it can put thousands of dollars back in your pockets.

Here is a link to an invite to a "do" sponsored by a teacher in our city who wants to build a dorm in Kenya.  She is holding a silent auction on May 13 and there are going to be other fun things going on. There is also a chance to "buy a bunk" but that might be a bit steep for some people unless you want to get ten friends from work/school and contribute $12.50 each.  There will be many good items to bid on, including photos by Jack Cohen, who is donating three wonderful 11 X 14 photos of cheetahs and leopards from Kenya, taken when he was there last year.  And I am donating photo magnets because every little bit counts much more over there than it does here.

So, check out this site, and see about going over May 13 to help Sarah Kesler build her dorm.

Significant change is about to occur to the Canada Pension Plan before 2012 is upon us. Canadians who have already started to receive CPP and are not going to be working in the future will not be affected by these changes. However, for the rest of us, the following changes will apply:

  • The monthly amount will increase for those waiting until after age 65 to receive CPP. The longer you wait, the more you get until age 70.

  • The monthly amount will decrease for those taking CPP between ages 60-65. The sooner you begin the less you will receive.

  • You will not have to stop working in order to begin receiving CPP.

  • If you are under 65, receiving CPP and still working, you and your employer will have to continue making CPP contributions. This will increase your benefit, however, later.

  • If you are between 65-70 you can choose to continue to make CPP contributions. If you contribute then your employer has to do so as well. This will increase your benefit when you do begin to receive it.

  • A longer period of low earning years will be excluded from your CPP benefit calculation. This too will increase your benefit.

Ted Kornak, retired teacher and Square Dancing veteran, is interested in starting and teaching a Square Dancing Group for beginners.  Those wishing more information can contact him at (403)282-3047 or e-mail me at: ted@brentwoodprinting.com.

I am a retired teacher and I have taken up square dance calling as a hobby. My wife and I have been dancing for over 30 years and it has been the center of our social life over all this time. We have now taken up calling as a hobby and would like to find a group of people who might like to try out this activity. Really what I need is a class of students. It is a super physical activity for the body and great stimulus for the mind.

What I need is a minimum of four couples, but hopefully more. As this is a couples activity those wishing to join would have to have a partner. If two ladies want to dance together as partners they may do so, but one would have to learn the man's part. There is a lot of rapid physical movement involved so participants must be able to move at a brisk pace. Participants must also make a commitment to attend lessons regularly and not miss too often. I will arrange a location. Classes would be either in the morning between 9:30 to 11:30 or in the afternoon between 1:30 and 3:30. The cost would be determined by the price of the venue. For those who are unsure about trying this activity because they don't know if they would like it I can arrange an introductory lesson (at no cost) and those who wish to continue may start and those who are not interested don't have to continue.

The square dance season usually goes until mid April, but we can go longer if they wish. What I would like to do is find out how many would come back in September as we would be starting from the beginning again in order to accommodate any new dancers.

SCHOOL FOR DYSLEXIC CHILDREN

The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Calgary, is planning to open a school in the fall of 2009  for children who have been identified as Dyslexic.  There are now schools across Canada in Halifax, London, Windsor and Vancouver.
Dyslexia is a neurologically-based, often familial, disorder which interferes with the acquisition and processing of language.  Varying in degree of severity, it is manifested by difficulties in receptive and expressive language, including the system of processing sounds in language in reading, writing, spelling, handwriting and sometimes in arithmetic. Emotional disturbances and behavioural difficulties are often secondary results.  Dyslexia is not a result of lack of motivation, sensory impairment, inadequate instructional or environmental opportunities, or other limitingconditions, but may occur together with these conditions. Although dyslexia is life-long, individuals with dyslexia frequently respond successfully to timely and appropriate remediation.

Staff consisting of:  Directors, Receptionist, Secretary and Tutors are required.
Training of tutors requires 40 hours.
All expenses to train the staff and run the school will be provided by the Scottish
Rite.  Tutoring will take place after school, one hour a day, two days each week.
Each child  will be placed in a 24 week semester.
All positions will be on a voluntary basis with no remuneration.

If you would like more information, please contact
   Mr. Stan Clayton at 403-249-4691.

We will appreciate any support which you might be able to give us.
   Thank you.
