The Pre-Conference Banquet promises to be an exciting new venture, and a fun, and informative evening.  It's a chance to dress up for dinner, and enjoy Dalton's great cuisine. 

 

You will be "Royally" entertained as we will have the opportunity to dine with "Her Majesty". (Donna Sanders, an Operating Room, RN by trade, has been performing as "Her Majesty the Queen" since 1978. She lives in the Queen City, (of course!) Regina, Saskatchewan.

 

 

After entertaining friends and relatives for years, she finally went professional in 1998 and her career as a standup comedienne began. Donna has performed in New Zealand, USA and is well known across Canada.)

HEART HEALTH FOR WOMEN - Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death of women in Canada, yet few of us are aware of the risks. Lynette Pittman of the Women's Heart Initiative at Lindsay Park Center will discuss how CVD is largely preventable through on 'awareness' and learning how to live 'heart healthy'.

 

A TASTE OF SALSA - 'So you think you can dance', and you want a little more?  Join Marcos Ravelo, a master of Latin dances, from the Havana Cuban Dance Studio for a demonstration, and a chance to try a few steps.  Moving to a Latin beat will leave you breathless and wanting more.  

 

GET FIT FOR GOLF - Bring your putter for an early lesson, and get ready for the season ahead.  Jamie Driscoll, recognized as one of Alberta's best Teaching Pros, is back to give you a head start on putting, golf fitness and strategy.

 

YOGA - Desiree Evancio specializes in Svaroopa Yoga and is delighted to be able to offer an introductory session to you.  Dress for the occasion, and bring a towel or blanket.  Be prepared to enjoy yourself and be thoroughly refreshed.

 

ACTIVE RETIREES - "Come join the REA!! Learn about the CBE Retired Employees Association and the activities available to you.  I will share some background on the organization and some pictures of the adventures we have. Join us for some fun and friendship!"  Charlie Grant, retired CBE student, teacher, consultant, principal and truant. 

 

KITCHEN GARDENS - Thinking of growing your own food this summer, but don't know where to get started. Raised vegetable gardens can produce three times the produce as traditional gardens, and fit in small spaces, even on balconies -  Barry Erskine, host of Sunday's "Let's Talk Gardening" will share his expertise, answer questions, and give tips on getting started.

 

GROWING HARDY SHRUB ROSES - Did you know that there are many rose varieties that are both beautiful and easy to grow?  Jim Nielson, our resident Gardening Specialist will prove that life can be a 'bed of roses', even in Calgary.  Learn about the dozens of varieties available in local Nurseries, and how to plant and care for them.

 

ARBOR CARE - Patrick and Laura of Tom Ren's Tree Service will speak about all aspects of preventative tree care, including pruning, watering, mulching and fertilizing.  Also, learn about pest and disease control through cultural vs. chemical means.

 

TRAVEL ADVENTURES - GET A BANG FOR YOUR BUCK - Lawrence Rowley of Collette Vacations in addition to  reviewing the travel benefits CRTA members and friends enjoy with Collette Vacations, will highlight a number of tours currently experiencing high interest from the traveling public.

 

ALBERTA BOUND - Author and columnist, Joanne Elves does call Calgary home but is happy to be on any road to anywhere at anytime. She has written about Alberta for the Calgary Herald for 15 years. On April 21st Joanne would love to share her stories about exploring Alberta as long as everyone else brings their favorite story too.

 

RUN AWAY TO SEA - Shelley Good  of 'Cruise Plus' CRTA's newest Travel Partner will offer an INTRODUCTION TO CRUISING for novices who want to learn more about the 'Cruise Life Style' ... what to expect and how to choose your ideal holiday.

 

PORTS OF CALL - DESTINATIONS OF CHOICE - Shelly Good of 'Cruise Plus' will offer this second session, focusing on popular and exotic Cruise destinations, and how to get best value for your Travel investment.

 

SO YOU WANT TO BE AN ACTOR - Lisa Fanning is back to lead our aspiring actors. This high energy session will entail basic Improv. Techniques, with the use of costumes.  Everyone will participate in creating and performing their own skit using simple props and their imagination. Also covered will be the avenues to take if you are interested in acting in and around Calgary.

 

GETTING HEALTHY IN THE KITCHEN - Julie Van Rosendaal best-selling cookbook author and food and nutrition columnist on CBC Radio, lost 165 pounds by learning to cook healthier versions of her favorite foods. Julie will demonstrate recipes for snacks and appetizers that are low in fat and high in fiber, without sacrificing flavour. Copies of her books will be available to purchase.

 

GREAT EGGSPECTATIONS II - Linda Whitworth, of Alberta Egg Producers, brings back her microwave and stovetop, to demonstrate some EGG-citing recipes for everyday and entertaining. As well, learn the latest nutritional information on Eggs and a healthy diet.

 

MEMOIRS - Rediscover old memories and get them down on paper.  Join an instructor from the Alexandra Writers' Society to learn how to effectively remember and record the things that have shaped you, to pass them on to future generations of your family.

 

COWBOY POETRY - Mike Burns is a multi-talented musician, poet and story-teller. Come and be entertained and listen to the stories by this lifetime member of the Alberta Cowboy Poetry Association.

 

ARTA BENEFIT PLAN - Learn the advantages Alberta's Retired Teachers enjoy through this premium Dental, Health and Travel Benefits plan.  Be aware of the range of benefits you enjoy as a current or future participant. Johnson's Inc. representatives will present and answer questions on all ARTA plans.

 

ESTATES FOR MODERN FAMILIES  - As well as planning our own affairs, we have significant roles in those of friends or family. With pre-planning, costly problems and crises can be anticipated and avoided.  This session will focus on issues facing individuals who may be single or in non-traditional as well as traditional families,

 

PROTECTING ASSETS AGAINST THE RISK OF ILL-HEALTH OR DISABILITY -  Marilyn Peck R.N, E.P.C is a Long Term Care specialist.  She works with Sharon Levinson  in planning and implementing retirement plans that include protecting client's income in the event of ill health and disability. She will dispel many of the myths surrounding Long-Term Care. 

 

INVESTING IN VOLATILE MARKETS - How do you confidently manage your portfolio in today's turbulent times.  Bryn Gardener-Evans of HSBC Securities will discuss strategies that protect your assets as well as your investment goals and objectives.

 

TAX FREE SAVINGS PLANS - How do we fit this new government program into our financial plans?  Sharon Levinson  will review how our financial situation, and the factors and programs (RRSP and RIF's) can impact our retirement income.  Learn how to  strategically use accumulated savings and income to support retirement and to make assets work harder for you.

 

HOW I TAKE PHOTOS - George Brybicin has spent the last 35 years as a 'high altitude' photographer, and is one of the best known, and most published photographers of alpine wildlife and nature in Western Canada.  Besides a slide-show featuring his published photos, he will share stories of his work and adventures.  Copies of his books will be available for purchase.

 

FOUR FLAMES OF AGING - Discover the flames of Identity, Community, Passion and Purpose as we seek to answer the questions:  Who am I? Where is my place? What do I care about?  How do I make a difference? Judy Steiert presents this extension to the "Positive Aging" program.

 

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW ? - Demystify the Hi-Tech Cell Phone World with Mark Webster, Senior Corporate Account Manager for TELUS.  He will tackle the basics of cell phones as well as those tricky tasks that any 12 year old takes for granted.  Texting, Address Books, Photo E-Mailing, Bluetooth . . . you can be a master of them all.

 

OVERSEAS VOLUNTEERING  - Diana MacIntyre is a leader with the Tanbur African Aid Society, and a veteran of Overseas Volunteering. She will discuss her experiences, and opportunities for Retirees to get involved in working with teachers, adult, and other programs in Africa.
