CRTA Pension Policies
The
CRTA advocates the following regarding the Alberta Teachers' Pension
Plan
PP1. That following
resolution of the unfunded liability, the Teachers' Pension Plan be
removed from control by government.
PP2. That retired
teachers and practicing teachers be equal stakeholders of the plan
with equal representation on the Board which governs and
administers the plan.
PP3. That the plan be
governed and administered by a Board that represents and is
accountable to plan contributors, teachers in receipt of pensions
and, where applicable, to surviving spouses and teachers who have
contributed but are inactive.
PP4. That there be
defined for the plan, an ongoing process for assessing and
forecasting the needs of retirees, for determining the degree to
which the plan is meeting the needs of retirees and a process for
change and improvements in the plan.
PP5. That the plan be
disassociated from the Canada Pension Plan.
PP6. That a bridge
benefit be provided until disassociation can be effected.
PP7. That a plan be
developed for addressing the shortfall that retired teachers have
suffered since it became possible for teachers with full index to
retire at age 55.
PP8. That the Advance
-
Reduction provision be eliminated when disassociation is achieved.
PP9. That Cost of Living
provisions be 100% of inflation.
PP10. That analysis be
done to determine whether the Alberta Consumer Price Index or an
alternative more accurately reflects the cost of living in Alberta
and that Cola be 100% of the more accurate index.
PP11. That the salary
rollbacks of 1994/95 be investigated to determine the extent to
which teacher pensions were affected and that action be taken to
address teacher losses.
PP12. That the Premier be
requested to honor his promise to fix salaries after the debt was
paid.
PP13. That a
joint-unreduced spousal benefit be the norm for the Teachers’
Pension Plan instead of a reduced benefit. |
