ARTA and CRTA

To many in the retired teacher community, ARTA (The Alberta Retired Teachers' Association) is known for its role as sponsor of the health/dental and travel insurance program administered by Johnson Inc.  In order to access that insurance, one needs to be an ARTA member.

Questions are frequently raised with respect to the relationship between the CRTA (Calgary Retired Teachers' Association) the ARTA.  While the CRTA is a society registered under the Societies Act of Alberta, it is also one of the ARTA Branches.

As part of their duties, those who serve on the CRTA Executive Committee attend the ARTA Annual General Meeting (AGM) to hear reports, make decisions, approve budgets and monitor provincial operations.  Some executive members also serve in leadership positions with ARTA, in executive positions and on standing committees.  Significant contributions and service to the ARTA have resulted in ARTA Lifetime Memberships being awarded to some of our members.  The last two from Calgary to receive such honours were Frank Hoskyn and Dora Corbett.

Of late, the ARTA has begun a transition from an executive governed organization to one led by a Board of Directors in which each of the 14 branch presidents serves as a Director.  The ARTA President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Chairs of its four standing committees also sit on the Board.

In addition to your president, who serves as one of the ARTA Directors,  Paul Demers currently serves as Treasurer. Gordon Cumming is the Vice-President of ARTA.  Greg Chitrenky is working on the Communication and Technology Committee.  Irene Bruzga continues to serve on the Governance Committee.  Barb Smith serves on the Membership and Marketing committee.

Greg Chitrenky, Barb Smith, Gordon Cumming and Erich Berndt serve as our Branch Benefit Representatives.

Among the goals for the new organization are the development of a three-year business plan, full participation and representation in pension matters and improvements in the Health, Dental and Travel Insurance Plan.

If you have questions or comments regarding ARTA programs and/or benefits, you are invited to visit the ARTA website at http://www.albertarta.com.   Alternatively, you may wish to phone the appropriate executive member.
